A new location in the east of Uganda

A new location in the east of Uganda

KINDER EINE CHANCE currently operates in seven districts, all located in central Uganda. In total, there are 45 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as nine facilities for children with disabilities. More than 7,500 children and young people attend our educational institutions.

This development demonstrates that we have many years of experience in providing disadvantaged children with access to education and in providing targeted support to children with disabilities.

Now we are venturing into a completely new region of Uganda: In the Bukedea District, about a 7-hour drive from our head office in Zigoti, we are establishing a new location. It will be the twentieth location where we operate. This step is particularly significant for us, as we are aware that it will make monitoring and management even more challenging for our team in Uganda—not only because of the distance, but also because Teso is spoken in the Bukedea district. Until now, all of our locations have been in regions where, in addition to English, Luganda is the primary language.

The decision to take on this challenge was not made hastily. For years, we have maintained close contact with a Dutch nurse who primarily cares for children with disabilities in this region. She is over 80 years old, and her greatest concern is that there will be no one to care for these children after she is no longer able to do so.

In addition, a special opportunity arose: Rudolf Heckmüller made a 32-hectare plot of land available to us free of charge. He had tried to establish a school there over several years but realized that it would not succeed without strong local structures and a sufficient on-site presence.

In short: We are now building a facility for 100 children with disabilities, an inclusive kindergarten, and an inclusive primary school on the property. This location is led by Simon, a teacher who is originally from the area and has been working with us for 8 years.

With this step, we are not only expanding our work geographically but also taking on responsibility in a region where support is urgently needed.
